Welcome to a Vodcast by Simon Calder, The Independent’s travel editor. A Vodcast is a short video that you watch or download and enjoy at your leisure. This time, he’s visiting Bilbao in the Basque region of northern Spain. Simon starts his trip strolling along the impressive riverfront, which was once an industrial wasteland. He then visits the amazing Guggenheim Bilbao and chats to its director about the art gallery and its 10th anniversary celebrations this autumn. On a walking tour of the Old Town, Simon learns about the city’s history, shops and architecture, making time to explore its finest food market and eateries with local experts. That’s the great thing about Bilbao – it’s packed with opportunities for foodies to indulge in some of Spain’s finest food and drink. After visiting an ultra-contemporary hotel and the efficient Metro system, with its distinctive entrances designed by Norman Foster, Simon ends his visit at the nearby beach, before going up the famous Hanging Bridge, which has recently been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. |
