The K850i Strikes Back

We put some of the features of Sony Ericsson’s latest camera phone through their paces in a series of photographic tasks on technology expert David Phelan’s walk
to work along the South Bank

Our technology expert, David Phelan, strolls to work along London’s South Bank, taking in some of the capital’s most iconic attractions along the way, including the Houses of Parliament, County Hall – and its Star Wars exhibition – and the London Eye. The phone used to capture his journey, the new Sony Ericsson K850i, has a 5-megapixel camera and lots of clever photographic functions, such as red-eye reduction, video and image stabiliser, to avoid blurriness caused by slight hand movements, and BestPic, which takes nine pictures a second so you can choose the best one. Extraordinary People: David Phelan

The 5-megapixel Sony Ericsson K850i camera
phone boasts functions that make it cutting
edge. These include Photo fix, which improves
dark shots, and BestPic, which saves the shot
when you press the trigger, plus four shots
before you press it and four after. The xenon
flash is significantly brighter than most camera
phone’s and there are even scene modes, just
like on a conventional digital camera, where you
can optimise images with settings such as
Twilight, Landscape, Sports and so on. There’s
also a setting for photographing documents and
you can record videos to boot.

The K850i is available now at O2 stores or online

A 16x digital zoom means you can improve shots like this one of County Hall by cropping in.
